Ceiling Replacement and Room Refurbishment – Manchester School by WHL Projects
Project Overview:
WHL Projects was engaged to replace old, cracked lath and plaster ceilings in a Manchester based school. Some sections of the ceiling had already collapsed, making replacement essential for safety. The project also included roof repairs, improvements to fire compartmentation, and a full room refurbishment. To avoid disrupting school activities, we scheduled the work for over the Easter and summer holidays.
Project Details:
Inspection and Safety Preparations: The ceilings were approximately 5 metres high and made of traditional lath and plaster. We conducted asbestos testing before any removal work and followed all safety guidelines for managing dust and debris.
Ceiling Removal and Replacement:
Easter Holidays: We replaced 128m² of ceiling during the Easter break.
Summer Holidays: We completed the remaining 256m² over the summer holidays. Using tower scaffolds, we carefully removed the old ceilings, controlling dust with industrial extraction fans and a chute that directed debris straight into a skip outside.
Improving Fire Safety and Insulation: To enhance fire safety, we installed fire-rated ceiling boards and added insulation. This upgrade improves the rooms’ safety in the event of a fire and also enhances energy efficiency.
Finishing Touches – Smooth Skim and Painting: Once the fire-rated boards were installed, we skimmed the ceilings for a smooth finish. We repainted the entire rooms, including walls and woodwork, using a spray gun for an even, clean look. For the wood surfaces, we applied a clear varnish to increase durability.
Dust Control and Safety Equipment: Acknowledging that ceiling work can be extremely messy, we used industrial extraction fans to minimise dust and ensured all team members wore appropriate safety gear, in line with HSE standards.
Conclusion:
WHL Projects successfully completed the ceiling replacement and room refurbishment at the Manchester school. By scheduling the work during school holidays and using effective dust control, we minimised disruption and delivered a safe, clean, and updated environment for students and staff. This project highlights WHL Projects’ commitment to safety and quality in educational settings.
