Client: Private Homeowner
Contractor: WHL Projects
Structural Design: WHL Surveying & Engineering
Scope: Internal structural alterations, load-bearing wall removal, and chimney modification
Overview
WHL Projects were appointed to deliver a series of internal structural alterations at a residential property in Stockport, with structural engineering design provided by WHL Surveying & Engineering. The works included the removal of a load-bearing wall to create an open-plan kitchen-dining space and the adaptation of an original chimney breast to accommodate a freestanding cooker. The project was completed on time and to a high standard, enhancing both the functionality and visual appeal of the home.
Key Project Elements
1. Structural Knock-Through Works
A key feature of the project was the removal of a structural wall between the kitchen and dining room. WHL Surveying & Engineering provided the structural calculations and beam specification, and WHL Projects executed the works with precision:
Installation of RSJ steel beams to safely redistribute structural loads
Use of temporary propping to support the upper floor during demolition
Clean demolition practices to minimise disruption and maintain live occupancy
All installations were carried out in accordance with Building Regulations and engineer specifications.
2. Chimney Breast Alteration for Cooker Installation
To create a focal point in the new kitchen space, WHL Projects opened up the chimney breast to allow for the installation of a range-style cooker:
A new steel lintel was installed to support the masonry above the opening
The brickwork was carefully retained and made good to provide a characterful, exposed finish
Services were coordinated to accommodate the cooker’s installation seamlessly
This created a practical and visually striking feature that blends the property’s original architecture with the client’s modern layout vision.
3. Integrated Design and Compliance
The collaboration between WHL Projects and WHL Surveying & Engineering ensured a seamless design-to-delivery process. WHL S&E produced all necessary calculations and liaised with building control, while WHL Projects carried out the on-site works to meet full compliance and inspection requirements.
