WHL PROJECTS - CASE STUDY

Replacement of External Staircase at Manchester Care Home

Project Overview

WHL Projects was appointed to remove a deteriorating external timber staircase at a care home in Manchester and replace it with a new reinforced concrete staircase. The existing timber steps had become unsafe due to age and exposure to the elements. The new structure was designed to improve durability, safety, and long-term access for staff and residents. Works were carried out with minimal disruption to the care home’s daily operations, and all safety measures were strictly adhered to.

Initial Demolition and Groundworks

The existing timber staircase was carefully dismantled and removed. The team took precautions to protect surrounding areas and maintain clear access to the building’s rear entrance. Once cleared, the ground was prepared for the new staircase with a levelled and compacted base.

Formwork Construction and Reinforcement

We constructed a bespoke timber and OSB shutter (formwork) to the required dimensions of the new staircase. The formwork was braced externally to ensure it maintained shape during the concrete pour. Inside the form, we installed a custom-made steel reinforcement cage to provide the structural strength required for heavy-duty use. This reinforcement was tied and elevated appropriately to ensure it remained within tolerance during the pour.

Concrete Pour and Curing

Once all pre-pour checks were completed, we poured high-strength concrete into the formwork. Care was taken to vibrate the concrete to eliminate air pockets and ensure a solid, uniform finish. The steps and landing were shaped precisely within the shutter to achieve correct riser and tread dimensions. The concrete was left to cure for several days before formwork removal.

Finishing Touches and Safety Installations

After curing, we removed the formwork to reveal the clean concrete staircase. To enhance safety and accessibility:

  • We applied yellow anti-slip nosing strips to each step to increase visibility and reduce the risk of slips and trips.
  • A galvanized steel handrail system was installed on both sides, securely fixed into the concrete base.
  • We reinstated the surrounding surface to ensure a flush and safe interface with the new staircase.
