SERVICE DETAILS

Structural Refurbishments & Alterations

Structural refurbishment sits at the heart of WHL Projects’ capability. We undertake complex internal and external alterations to commercial, public-sector and residential buildings throughout the UK. Whether it’s opening up an existing floor plate, forming new stair cores, strengthening slabs or waterproofing a basement, our approach is rooted in engineering discipline and practical buildability.

Specialist capability

Our teams manage the entire process—from investigation and temporary works design to controlled demolition and reinstatement. We work closely with structural engineers to ensure every stage is fully calculated and sequenced. Typical activities include:

  • Removal of load-bearing walls and formation of new structural openings
  • Installation of steel and concrete framing, goalposts and transfer structures
  • Underpinning, piling and foundation stabilisation
  • Façade retention systems for listed or occupied buildings
  • Reinforced-concrete slab alterations, coring and infill
  • Temporary propping, shoring and structural waterproofing

Many projects are delivered in occupied environments such as healthcare facilities or educational buildings. We plan works around the client’s operations, using dust suppression, acoustic barriers and safe pedestrian routes to maintain business continuity.

Design and coordination

As principal contractor, WHL Projects coordinates the design risk assessment, temporary-works register and permit system. Our in-house engineers and our sister company, WHL Surveying & Engineering, provide detailed measured surveys and structural analysis before site mobilisation. This collaboration allows early identification of load paths, sequencing challenges and opportunities for value engineering.

We’re experienced in both design-and-build and traditionally tendered frameworks. Our technical reviews often reduce steel tonnage or simplify connection details, providing time and cost savings without compromising integrity.

Technical assurance and compliance

All structural alterations are executed to BS 5950, BS EN 1993 and the latest Building Regulations. Site managers hold SMSTS certification and our company is a member of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), underpinning our professional standards.

Our quality-assurance process covers:

  1. Pre-construction surveys – verification of existing conditions and material strength
  2. Method statements and sequencing plans – engineer-approved before works start
  3. Inspection and test plans (ITPs) – photographic and signed records for each element
  4. Manufacturer installation sign-off – welding, grouting, or chemical anchors verified by warranty providers

All documentation is collated into comprehensive O&M manuals. The involvement of our RICS- and ICE-regulated sister company ensures professional oversight from initial survey to final certification.

Health, safety and environment

Working with existing structures demands careful control of vibration, dust and load transfer. Each site operates under our Construction Phase Plan and environmental management system. Lifting operations are managed by qualified Appointed Persons, and all operatives carry the relevant trade CSCS cards.

Waste materials are separated and recycled wherever possible. Hazardous substances such as lead paint or bituminous coatings are removed under controlled conditions by licensed specialists.
