Structural Alterations for 1930s House – Chimney Breast and Stack Removal

Project Overview:

WHL Projects was entrusted with the structural transformation of a 1930s residential property in Manchester. The primary goal was to create additional internal space by removing a large, central chimney breast, including the external chimney stack, while ensuring structural integrity and compliance with building standards.

Project Details:
  1. Chimney Breast and Stack Removal: The team successfully removed the internal chimney breast from the first and second floors and the external chimney stack, which opened up valuable internal space and improved the layout’s functionality.

  2. Roof Restoration with Salvaged Materials: After removing the external chimney stack, WHL Projects carefully patched in the roof covering using matching tiles sourced from a salvage yard, preserving the property's original aesthetic.

  3. Floor Patching on Two Levels: With the chimney breast removed, the first and second timber floors were skillfully patched in, restoring continuity and ensuring a seamless finish.

  4. Steel Beam Installation: A new steel beam was installed at ground floor level to provide the necessary structural support. WHL Projects handled all aspects, from supply and installation to performing structural calculations, ensuring full compliance with building standards.

  5. Attention to Site Management: Throughout the project, the team maintained a clean and organised site, minimising disruption to the client and prioritising safety.

Conclusion:

WHL Projects delivered a careful and efficient structural renovation for this 1930s Manchester home, enhancing the property’s space and functionality while respecting its original character. This project underscores WHL Projects' dedication to quality, compliance, and careful site management, resulting in a successful transformation that meets the client’s needs for additional living space.
