Case Study

Rebuilding of Gable Wall – Manchester by WHL Projects

Project Overview:

WHL Projects were engaged to restore and rebuild the gable wall of a circa 1910 property in Manchester. Following a thorough structural assessment, it was determined that the original cast iron wall ties had corroded extensively, causing the wall to bulge and making it unsuitable for repair with methods like the Helifix system.

Project Details:
  1. Structural Assessment and Diagnosis: WHL Projects conducted a detailed inspection of the gable wall, revealing that the original cast iron wall ties were severely corroded, compromising the wall’s stability and causing significant bulging.

  2. Wall Dismantling and Reconstruction: The team carefully removed the external skin of the gable wall and rebuilt it with new, durable wall ties, ensuring long-term stability and safety.

  3. Use of Lime Mortar for Heritage Preservation: Given the age of the property, WHL Projects chose lime mortar for the rebuild to maintain compatibility with the original construction and allow the wall to "breathe." This approach helps to protect the historic brickwork from future damage.

  4. Addressing Past Cement Repointing: Previous cement repointing likely contributed to the corrosion of the cast iron ties. Using lime mortar in the rebuild aligns with traditional building practices, helping prevent future issues.

  5. Matching Replacement Bricks: To maintain the appearance of the original gable wall, WHL Projects sourced matching bricks to replace any damaged ones, achieving a seamless and cohesive look.

  6. Installation of Stone and Metal Lintels: WHL Projects reinstated stone lintels and installed new metal L-shaped lintels where needed, addressing support issues from past window installations and enhancing the wall's structural strength.

Conclusion:

With a focus on structural integrity and respect for the property’s heritage, WHL Projects successfully rebuilt the gable wall, providing the homeowner with peace of mind. This project demonstrates WHL Projects’ commitment to quality workmanship and preservation, ensuring that the property remains safe and well-preserved for years to come.
