Roofing Refurbishment and Safety Upgrades – Manchester School by WHL Projects

Project Overview:

WHL Projects was commissioned to perform urgent roofing repairs at a school in Manchester following significant leaks that led to water damage in corridors and stairwells.

The project included extensive work on both flat and pitched roofs, along with the replacement of corroded cast iron hoppers and downpipes, which posed a serious safety risk. All works were carried out under a JCT building contract, ensuring that each stage met stringent quality and compliance standards.

Project Details:

  1. Lead Valley Lining: We lined over 100 metres of lead valleys with a felt covering to enhance durability and protect against water ingress, helping extend the life of the valleys.

  2. Flat Roof Replacement with Bauder System: WHL Projects replaced approximately 200 square metres of flat roofing over corridors and other key areas. We installed a built-up Bauder system with insulation, ensuring new falls were created for improved drainage. This high-performance roofing system not only boosts energy efficiency and weather resistance but also comes with a 20-year guarantee for added peace of mind. All works were reviewed and signed off by a certified Bauder technician, verifying compliance with Bauder standards.

  3. Lead Flashing Replacement: We replaced the lead flashings around chimneys to create a watertight seal and protect against future leaks, ensuring the building’s long-term resilience.

  4. Replacement of Cast Iron Hoppers and Downpipes: Eight large cast iron hoppers and downpipes, which had become severely corroded, were replaced to eliminate safety hazards and ensure efficient drainage.

  5. Slipped Slate and Ridge Tile Repairs: WHL Projects addressed areas with slipped slates and rebedded ridge tiles to further secure the roof and protect it from weather-related damage.

Conclusion:

WHL Projects delivered a comprehensive roofing refurbishment for the Manchester school, covering urgent repairs and essential safety upgrades. By implementing the Bauder flat roofing system, replacing corroded drainage components, and ensuring reliable water management through lined lead valleys, we safeguarded the building against future water damage. The project, backed by a 20-year guarantee and completed under a JCT contract with sign-off from a Bauder technician, demonstrates WHL Projects’ commitment to quality, compliance, and durability in educational settings.
