Case Study
Suspended Timber Floor Repair – Manchester School by WHL Projects
Project Overview:
WHL Projects was engaged to repair a bulging suspended timber floor at a school in Manchester.
The floor, previously covered in vinyl, had become unstable and uneven, creating a tripping hazard and an unsafe environment for the pupils. The original hardwood floor was swelling, likely due to inadequate ventilation, which contributed to the structural issues. To minimise disruption, we scheduled and completed the repairs over the October half-term break.
Project Details:
Initial Assessment and Diagnosis: Upon investigation, WHL Projects found that the original hardwood floor was bulging due to moisture buildup and lack of ventilation. The swelling was causing the floor to lift in areas, making it unstable and hazardous.
Removing the Existing Vinyl Floor: The initial step involved carefully removing the existing vinyl floor, which had been patched and repaired multiple times. This allowed us to fully access the damaged hardwood floor beneath.
Replacing Damaged Floorboards: We lifted the affected floorboards and replaced them with new, stable floorboards. This ensured a level and secure foundation for the new floor covering.
Improving Ventilation: To prevent future issues with moisture and swelling, WHL Projects improved the subfloor ventilation. This step was essential in maintaining the longevity of the new flooring by allowing adequate airflow and reducing moisture accumulation.
Floor Screeding and Leveling: Once the new floorboards were installed, we applied a screed across the floor to create a smooth, even surface. This ensured a stable base for the new vinyl flooring.
Installation of New Polyflor Vinyl Covering: To complete the project, WHL Projects installed a durable Polyflor vinyl covering. This new floor is not only safer and more stable but also provides a professional, clean look that enhances the learning environment.
Conclusion:
The floor repair at the Manchester school was completed efficiently over the half-term break, minimising disruption to students and staff. WHL Projects delivered a safe, stable, and long-lasting solution by addressing the root cause of the issue and installing a high-quality vinyl finish.
The project highlights WHL Projects' commitment to safety, durability, and careful scheduling to meet client needs in educational environments.
