Underground Drainage, Foundation, and Floor Slab Construction up to DPC – Styal, Cheshire by WHL Projects

Project Overview:

WHL Projects began work on a large-scale residential project in Styal, Cheshire, by completing all necessary groundwork and drainage up to the damp-proof course (DPC) level.

This initial phase involved demolishing the existing rear extension, constructing new foundations, installing a drainage system, and setting up cross ventilation for existing timber floors. The work established a solid base for the upcoming stages of the project, ensuring everything was built to plan and ready for the main construction phase.

Project Details:

  1. Demolition of Existing Rear Extension: The first step was the careful demolition and removal of the property’s existing single-storey rear extension. This cleared the way for the new foundation and drainage work required for the project’s expansion.

  2. Foundation Excavation and Construction: New foundations were excavated and poured to a depth of 1.4 meters in certain areas, providing the necessary stability for the forthcoming structure. This foundational work was critical in supporting the future build.

  3. 60m² Floor Slab Installation and Engineering Bricks up to DPC: A 60-square-meter concrete floor slab was poured and finished, forming a level and strong base for the build. Above the slab, engineering bricks were laid up to the DPC level, creating a durable and moisture-resistant barrier to protect the structure above.

  4. Comprehensive Drainage System: WHL Projects installed a new underground drainage system, which included three manholes connected to a septic tank. Additional drainage runs were set up to accommodate future plumbing for island units, downstairs toilets, and other internal fixtures. These drainage routes were planned meticulously to ensure efficient waste management and compliance with building regulations.

  5. Cross Ventilation for Existing Timber Floors: Recognising the importance of ventilation for timber preservation, we installed cross ventilation systems to support the property’s existing timber floors. This setup will help prevent moisture buildup and improve air circulation, enhancing the durability of the wooden floor structures.

  6. Coordination with Architect and Engineer: WHL Projects worked in close collaboration with the architect and structural engineer to ensure every aspect of the foundational work adhered to design and structural requirements. This teamwork was essential to align all project elements and ensure they were executed precisely as specified.

Conclusion:

With the demolition, foundation work, drainage, and floor slab up to DPC completed in Styal, WHL Projects has successfully laid the groundwork for the next stages of this residential project. This phase highlights WHL Projects' expertise in managing complex groundwork, ensuring adequate ventilation, and coordinating across disciplines to achieve a well-planned and solid foundation. The client can now proceed with confidence, knowing that this critical initial phase was completed with a focus on quality, durability, and compliance.
